Following on from my pitching presentation to the class in which I received very positive feedback/ comments, one issue was raised to be thought about and approached. In my music video, I intend on having an attractive girl being the catalyst for the video, and for the male members of the band to chase. Due to the nature of the sub-genre of pop/rock with rock n roll origins, this would be a common convention and I will mainly be focusing on the idea of the boys making fools out of themselves. According to research, foolishness in boys can be an endearing feature for girls and in particular teenage girls. Therefore, I believe that by playing on the idiocy of the male band members, rather than sexualising the female character I am appealing to my target audience and using my female character as a secondary figure in the video.
I was made aware that I should try to avoid over sexualising my female character as this would not be particularly attractive to my teenage female target audience. However, many theories can apply to this- the queer theory in particular.
The queer theory focuses on the idea that straight men/women can find attractive and be attracted to members of the same sex. After speaking to my Facebook Group, female members of my class and using personal experience, I am aware that this is dominant within my target audience. This pole is recorded above and as you can see- all votes have said that teenage girls (my target audience) have said that they find members of the same sex attractive or could be attracted to them. Therefore, from this research I have settled for the fact that although Hazel (my female actress) will be there to represent the male ideal and highlight the superficiality of the situation, my target audience of 14-18 year old females would still appreciate her beauty.
