Aspirational Theory

As mentioned in the previous post, some audience members might be attracted to the female character due to the 'queer theory'. The queer theory focuses on the idea that straight men/women can find attractive and be attracted to members of the same sex.

However, this is not the only reason that an audience enjoy/ appreciate a character in the media. There is also an inspirational aspect in which the audience member aspires/ hopes to be like that character. This is common amongst teenage girls with admirable celebrity artists such as Rihanna, Beyonce etc. Although these artists ooze sexuality in their music videos, this is acceptable for the young and often female target audience as they ooze star quality that teenage girls love due to their confidence. I wish to include the confidence of the female artists within the character of the female in the video- and show this by subverting the stereotypical 'hopeless romantic' girl and having the confidence within herself to stick to her decision and ignore the boy's attempts.

Here are some video examples from Youtube whereby teenage girls might feel as though they want to 'be' the artist due to their fame and beauty:

In this video, young girl's are exposed to very sexual suggestive body language, hints at drug use, provocative clothing and gambling. This isn't something that I believe should be promoted to a teenage audience and my video includes nothing like this. As this video is deemed 'appropriate' for a young audience, I therefore feel that my product which is positively innocent in comparison to this would be successful and appropriate for my target audience. This is because the whole scenario of my video will be unrealistic and cheesy to the point of hilarity. In terms of costume, my female protagonst will be in substantially more clothing than Rihanna is in this video, with only hints at a 'cleavage' shot to show obvious sex appeal.
