Survey Results

Here are the results gathered from my survery asked to 15 females aged between 12 and 18 years old. My asking specific questions to my target audience, I am able to pin down key elements of both my main an ancillary tasks that they like in already existing texts. I will therefore use this research when creating my own products.

N.B Results are not shown in question order.

As you can see from this graph, the way in which my target audience consume their music videos and websites is mostly via their mobile phone, however, this is followed by their computer with one less mark. Only 2 people out of the 15 use a tablet to access these texts. I will therefore try to incorporate elements of the mobile phone usage when creating my webpage in particular, as often websites have a 'mobile' option. I may do this be including links to apps that can be downloaded onto a phone. As my audience will tend to have mobile access to my texts 24 hours a day, I will also bare this in mind when creating my product and enable an easily accessible video and webpage.

I asked the question, which kind of artist do you prefer listening to with your friend. As you can see from the results, the most popular form of artist out of the 15 people I asked was a boy band, scoring 7/15 in the most popular. As a boy band has proven to be the most popular type of artist, I can therefore feel confident that by choosing my boy band as my artist, I am appealing my young female audience as they enjoy listening to this kind of artist. I will therefore continue with my research and development of my product using a boy band now that I am aware this is the most popular artist type with my target audience. This popularity also implies that the target audience would be more obliged to buy memorabilia such as a digipak or visit a website for a boy band. This therefore supports both my main task and ancillary tasks.

I asked my target audience how many digipaks they actually own themselves to render the value that my audience hold over the package. The results show that 60% of the people in question owned between 6 & 10 which is more than I had initially thought. This result therefore emphasizes how my target audience take interest in digipak cds and obviously enjoy buying/owning them. I will therefore try to create a digipak that is of a high quality that would attract my target audience, and make it as creative and innovative as possible.

From the survey, I found that the things that my audience like the most about digipak is fairly evenly split. The winner by one answer in this case was the inclusion of a message from the band, however only one point behind was a lyric section, closely followed by images of the band. This has highlighted that these three elements of a digipak are popular with my target audience, and I will therefore strive to put all three within my product, as all three are fairly evenly popular.

I decided to ask my target audience if they like to display the front cover of their digipaks. I chose this question as I believed it would cement the importance of an attractive and creative front cover of a digipak for my audience. As you can see from the results there isn't a great deal of difference in terms of numbers, however 7 people said that yes they would display their digipaks. Therefore, I feel that it is important to bare in mind that some of my target audience like to display these front covers and I therefore must arrive to create an attractive and appealing digipak to entice the reader.
N.B. I also understand that the main purpose of the front cover of a digipak is to attract the audience, and the manufactures require an attractive front cover as a point of sale as an attractive and eye catching front cover could determine the sales figures of the digipak. Therefore, an attractive and suitable front cover is important in initially selling the product, before the audience then get the choice to display these products.

I wanted to find out what additional extras my target audience found most interesting about a music video. The options were the mise-en-scene, the costumes or the actor interaction. The results were pretty close to each other, however costume proved to be the most popular choice. Having found out this result, I must now try to ensure that the costumes I dress my model's in are creative and attractive in order to appeal my audience. The mise-en scene ranked second and this has shown me the importance of setting the scene with props and additional extras to allow my audience to take a keen interest in the video. The mise-en-scene also builds the scenario for the video and can make the video realistic for the target audience. I will also take into consideration the way in which the actors interact with one another as this has placed on the results bar but will ensure that my main concern is that of costume.

I wanted to ask my audience what style/kind of music videos they preferred as to cement whether my idea for my own video would be suitable. As you can see from the results shown, 40% of the people in question prefer lighthearted videos that lack seriousness. I believe that this is a typical convention of pop music videos and also of pop/rock videos and I therefore feel that my initial idea of a lighthearted and fun music video would therefore prove popular with my target audience. Similarly, the next most popular style of video was a narrative based one. My video will mix both musical elements and a narrative section in a lighthearted way. I now feel confident in my ideas and feel that I can continue to develop these ideas knowing now that the most popular styles are both featured in my product.

When I asked which kind of music video is preferred, the answer that was given by 70% of my people in question said that rapid/energetic videos were more appealing to them than an slow/quiet video. The pop/rock sub-genre would struggle to utilise a slow and quiet video due to the nature of the loud guitar lead and other instruments, therefore I feel confident that my target audience will enjoy the style and form of my music video due to it utilising a rapid and energetic style.

I felt that it was important to determine whether my target audience enjoy my chosen sub-genre of pop/rock. The options that I included in my survey were indie/rock, commercial pop, electro/pop and finally pop/rock. 7 out of the 15 people that I asked actually selected pop/rock as their most liked sub-genre. I was extremely relieved to find this result as I can now progress with my desired plans knowing that my target audience enjoy the sub-genre moreover any other. I believe this is because my target audience is mainly young teenage girls, and pop/rock musicians are usually young male bands who the young teenage audience can adore and lust over. I also feel confident that by using the band that I have chosen to utilise throughout my texts this will prove popular with my target audience as the band are young males and attractive- good basis to attract a young teenage female audience. Commercial pop was then ranked in with 4 choices, and I believe that this is because this is the kind of pop that is displayed more to the target audience due to the amount of revenue it brings in for the music industry. Commercial pop tends to be quite silly and fun in their musical influence, style and videos and I therefore feel that I can include this element in particular in my music video and website as a device of widening my target audience.

This result surprised me. Coming from my research and planning of last year, when asking the question about whether the target audience prefer an image or text led product, the result was pretty much all image led. However, I asked whether the target audience preferred an image or text led website/digipak and there was only 6% difference in the answer. Although image led won with 53%, text led products came in at 47%. I therefore feel that knowing this, I should therefore try to create a happy medium between the two when creating my website and digipak as a way of pleasing both sides of my target audience. I will thus adapt this research to my product.

I believed that by asking how often my target audience watched music videos, I was able to determine their usage of music videos in their life and the importance they place on it. The highest result showed that most people in question watch music videos at least once a week and this therefore emphasises that my target audience are surrounded by music videos. This has therefore emphasised the importance of creating a successful and accessible music video for my target audience that encourages them to watch and share the video with their friends.

I felt that I needed to ask the question about what genre of music was the favourite amongst my target audience as a device of justifying if my umbrella genre of 'pop' music was the most popular. As the results show, over 70% of the people in question said that pop music was their favourite genre, with 14 & 13% of secondary results showing that rock and indie music were ranked also. By selecting the pop genre I am able to captivate a wider spectrum of audience as it is generally the most popular genre of music. Also, by choosing pop/rock as my sub-genre I am also ensuring those audience members who selected rock as their preferred genre are counted for too as the sub-genre incorporates slight aspects of the rock genre. By doing this, I am able to reach as wide an audience as possible and achieve greater success with my products.

I wanted to find out which features of a typical website attract my audience most. I found that there was a fairly even split as to what attracts my target audience most to a certain website. Therefore, I will try to include all 4 of these options when creating my own product, but will mainly ensure that the social media links are included, as this proved to be the most popular feature of a website amongst my target audience. I will also ensure that there are videos, images and a latest news section on my website to keep my website as attractive for a wide amount of people as possible.

By asking how my target audience watch music videos, I can pin down the most popular medium for video watching and make sure that my own product is acceptable and suitable for that medium. As expected, Youtube was the most popular choice. I believe this is because it is free and can be accessed by a wide spread of new media technologies. However, a smaller percentage of audience members still watch music videos on music channels such as MTV. As this channel runs all day and is easier to access for younger children, I must be aware of my content when creating my product and be aware that anyone, anywhere and at any time can access my product via Youtube and other video watching devices.
