Mystery Music Records- Institution Logo

As part of the project, I was required to create my own institution that would represent my band, The Maverick Rejects. A logo was essential as on digipaks/cd covers and often band websites, the record label logo is conventional as it puts a stamp and identity onto the band. Here is the logo that I have produced for my label.

N.B. The grey background pictured here appears transparent on actual products.

This logo is going to be primarily identifiable by the image of the silhouetted man singing into the microphone. From previous research, I found that all of the major record labels tend to have an image that is immediately linked and identifiable with their company. Here are some examples which influenced my creation:

As you can see, the majority of these major labels are firstly in monochrome, black and white colours. I focused also on 'Island Records', as it was this record label that produced the original version of 'Five Colours in Her Hair' by McFly, whom are the band I have taken greatest inspiration from across all mediums of this project and indeed the song that I recreated with my own band. I believe that these logos work in black and white as each label represents a multitude of artists, and by keeping the colours of the logos plain, they are genre neutral. As I created my own label with the intention of it's success being as big as these inspirational labels, I to have incorporated this use of colour into my own product. Also, each of these logos tends to have a transparent or white background. The use of the transparent background ensures that the logo can be placed on a number of it's representing products and is transferrable across different media platforms. I have therefore incorporated this element into my own logo so that it can be used in different mediums of my products.
I felt the image had connotations of mystery and indeed music as the male figure is silhouetted, with no pinning down of character and personage. By including the silhouette of a microphone, music and singing is connoted which gives the logo an easily identifiable name to the record label. I took the inspiration for the name from Pop/Rock band, The Beatles album, 'The Magical Mystery Tour' which achieved great worldwide success. This links back to the genre of music my band is promoting (Pop/Rock) and is a clever link to a recognised album.
