Narrative Theories
My narrative had to be simple and not over complicated so not to confuse my young target audience. It is conventional of pop/rock music videos to follow a very simple narrative that is packed with comical chaos and a lack of dignity from the band members that ultimately leads to them being foolish and thus enabling the audience to laugh at their expense.
I have started to explore online site, Go Animate to demonstrate how my music video falls into certain narrative forms.
A subversion of Todorov's Theory of Narrative Organization
Although my narrative doesn't follow Todorov's Theory of Narrative Organization, my video follows a similar vain however doesn't end in a particularly happy light for the band members. However, this ending does create comedy for the audience as they see the comical characters look foolish in their endeavours to win the girl. A number of pop/rock music videos follow this unique theory particular to the genre, having created it for the genre to add comedy for the audience and therefore my narrative organization is conventional of the pop/rock music genre.
Disequilibrium: The boys being bored with their monotonous jobs. Finding themselves stuck within their own world with nothing to stimulate them.
Chaotic Equilibrium: The boys finding entertainment and pleasure in pursuing a girl, despite the fact they lose their initial bored and boring characteristics.
New Disequilibrium: The boys return to their boring jobs, knowing nothing of the chaotic equilibrium. However, Joe (The drummer) finds himself in a new disequilibrium as he shakes his head at what could have been.
Vladimir Propp's Character Type Theory.
The main two character types that my characters fall into is that of the protagonists (the males) as the actions follows them and an antagonist (the female) as she subverts the action and causes the chaos for the male characters.
The female is also the binary opposite of the boys:
Males: Lack of self control. Fooled arrogance. Male. Sexual insecurity. Immature.
Female: Sexually confident. Confident within herself. Female. Mature. Never loses face.
These character types and binary opposites are again, conventional of pop/rock music videos as there is often always a female character who is the catalyst for the action, as she is in my product. Similarily, the boy band members are often portrayed as foolish and desperate for the girl, as this is often an endearing quality for the female audience to find in the boy band members.
The best example of an established product is within this video below as I was heavily inspired by this video when creating my own product, and there is clear identifiable characters/ narrative sets with this video and my own.
