Evaluation Question 1- Conventions (Genre)

GENRE

Pop/Rock was my chosen music genre because during my research and planning phases, I found that this was a very popular genre of music amongst my chosen target audience. Generally, I have remained fairly conventional to the music genre in a bid to make my product look as professional as possible, and as likely as possible to be a real product on the market. I therefore did intensive research into the conventions of pop/rock music videos to see what is conventional of them so that I could try to include this in my own product.

The Girl:

In pop/rock music videos, the centre of the action is always a result of a female entering the lives of the male band members. I therefore decided to use this convention and yet challenge it by making this female character a dream whom doesn't exist. The girl in my video is quirky and unique, and could be directly linked to the pop/rock genre due to her vintage looks and quirky style. However, her heightened reality and non existence in the resolution of the video develops upon the idea of the men looking foolish to win the girl in pop/rock music videos, because not only do they not get her, but she doesn't actually exist.

The Instruments:

In pop/rock music videos, a great focus is placed upon showing images of the band playing their instruments. This is because pop/rock is heavily guitar based and therefore should be shown where the 'live' element is coming from. I heavily featured elements of the band members playing their instruments in order to use this convention because I appreciate the importance of instruments for the genre. This also shows the band members as real people, rather than playing a character which encourages the audience to watch the video to get a better understanding of who the band members really are which helps them connect to the band as an overall product.

Location:

As mentioned in other evaluative posts, my choice in location was extremely relevant to the genre. Generally they start in a working environment, which my video too employs when the action first begins in an ice cream parlour, although the black and white colours make it look mundane and boring. The inclusion of a rehearsal room was something that not all pop/rock music videos include, as often their 'live element' takes place within the environment of the narrative. However, I decided to challenge this and place the 'live' instrumental section in a rehearsal room as I felt this showed an environment that was somewhere the band would flourish and be able to truly be themselves. The room was equipped with all instrumental requirements and therefore had an authentic look of a place that real music is performed and made. I chose this also as a way of distancing the band from the action which is revealed isn't actually reality and therefore could allow the band to narrate the story as an outsider looking in to the action of the video by placing them in this environment.

Costumes:

The costumes were also related to the genre as they were all in the same suit and tie which is conventional of pop/rock. This shows them as a unit which is very important to the pop/rock genre who promote themselves as a band rather than fully individuals, promoting good team work. The black/white clothing is a direct link to the origins of pop/rock when rock and roll performers all wore black/white suits in order to look smart whilst defying the rules of looking completely in tact through their music. During the action scene, I included this when all the boy band were dressed in a white shirt, black pants and an orange bow tie which kept them in uniform but also parodied the conventional monochrome colours to add a brighter feel to the video.
